It’s Saturday, which means it’s time for my usual roundup of everything new worth checking out in RPGs, strategy games, and every kind of turn-based hybrid in between. This week brings a handful of major releases, along with plenty of promising new demos to dive into.
The full release of the latest tactical game from the developers behind Hard West II and Rogue Waters has finally arrived, returning to the Old West with a horror twist. We’ve also got the sequel to the choice-driven narrative RPG The Life and Suffering, putting players in the middle of another compelling story packed with branching paths and meaningful decisions.
And as I mentioned, there are plenty of demos for intriguing, promising RPGs, rounding out the 10 turn-based titles I recommend checking out this final weekend of July.
The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian
- Developer: Schisma Games
- Publisher: 101XP
- Platform: PC
- Release Date: July 20, 2026
- Steam Page
Let’s begin with the most substantial narrative RPG released this week. Set in the same universe as The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, Prince Jerian examines the Great Arknian Empire from the opposite end of its unforgiving social hierarchy.
Jerian is born at the top of the system and raised to become emperor, but that power leaves him responsible for deciding whether the old order should be preserved, reformed, or completely dismantled.
The story follows him from childhood toward the throne, with decisions affecting the imperial treasury, the clergy, the noble houses, the common people, his family, and his own sense of identity.
This is closer to interactive fiction and political simulation than a conventional RPG, with the real conflict coming from competing interests and consequences that may not become clear until much later in Jerian’s life.
Dark Rail – Demo
- Developer: Steam Veil Games
- Publisher: JanduSoft
- Platform: PC
- Demo Release Date: July 17, 2026
- Full Release: To Be Announced
- Steam Page

One of the most interesting demos now available is for sure Dark Rail, a turn-based management roguelite in which players command the Inquisition from an industrial city at the edge of a collapsing empire.
Prisoner shipments must be maintained, forcing inquisitors to travel by train in search of heretics, magical beasts, and anyone else capable of satisfying the quota.
Every expedition consumes supplies and can leave agents injured, traumatized, or completely broken, while conditions back home steadily become more dangerous. Raising taxes provides desperately needed income but increases the risk of revolt, and allowing madness to spread may eventually require sacrifices.
Inquisitors can be trained, leveled, equipped, and assigned specialized roles, making the choice of who to send on each mission just as important as the decisions made during it. The demo introduces the first region and the central balance between resources, public unrest, and supernatural corruption.
Nightmare Frontier – Version 1.0
- Developer: Ice Code Games
- Publisher: Slitherine Ltd.
- Platform: PC
- Early Access Release: June 16, 2025
- Version 1.0 Release Date: July 22, 2026
- Steam Page

After just over a year in Early Access, Nightmare Frontier has reached its complete Version 1.0 release.
This tactical extraction RPG sends groups of scavengers into a ruined boomtown from an alternate version of the early 1900s, where valuable supplies are guarded by physical manifestations of human fears.
Every rescued character carries one of sixteen possible fears, and the composition of the deployed crew influences which Dreadweavers, hazards, and resources appear during the next expedition.
Combat is fully deterministic, removing hit percentages and turning each shootout into a positional puzzle. Bullets can ricochet from environmental objects, enemies can be pushed into hazards or friendly lines of fire, and successful attacks can be chained together to extend a turn.
The 1.0 update also rewrites large portions of the narrative, improves equipment transfers, expands interactions in the Docks district, and introduces additional weaknesses and status effects for the monsters roaming the city.
Tactichord: Glam Strategy – Demo
- Developer: Ichigoichie
- Platform: PC
- Release Date: To Be Announced
- Demo: Available Now
- Steam Page

Tactichord: Glam Strategy easily has one of the most unusual premises. Set in suburban America at the beginning of the 1990s, it follows aspiring bassist Diane Eason as she forms a metal band and tries to escape the mediocrity of high-school life.
Battles are presented as turn-based tactical performances where musicians use close-range attacks to convert opponents into fans, accumulate resources, and unleash character-specific power moves.
The riffs selected during each stage and the lyrics chosen during individual turns help construct the song accompanying the battle. Outside combat, dialogue choices can support or antagonize bandmates, while instruments, audio effects, and increasingly elaborate costumes provide additional customization.
The free demo covers the first act of Diane’s story and includes six tactical levels alongside original songs and the game’s character-based special moves.
Celestial Descends – Early Access
- Developer: Destined Game Studio
- Platform: PC
- Early Access Release Date: July 23, 2026
- Steam Page

I already covered Celestial Descends in detail earlier this week, but its Early Access launch clearly deserves a place in this recap.
The xianxia tactical RPG currently contains nineteen combat chapters, approximately 70% of its planned main storyline, fifteen recruitable companions, and more than thirty hours of content.
Grid-based encounters emphasize terrain, formations, and the interaction between each companion’s abilities, while character builds combine talents, rune stones, artifacts, elixirs, spirit pets, and team composition.
Some challenge battles introduce randomized conditions and roguelite elements, requiring groups to adapt. Crafting also plays an important role, allowing collected materials and recipes to produce artifacts, consumables, charms, and other equipment with partially unpredictable results.
Away from the main story, the current build includes optional regions, recurring world bosses, side quests, fishing, and golden-cicada-tree cultivation, with the developer expecting Early Access to last around one year.
Dungeon Settlers – Demo
- Developer: CanOpener
- Platforms: PC, Mac
- Early Access Release Date: September 10, 2026
- Demo: Available Now
- Steam Page

As mentioned earlier, Dungeon Settlers is not strictly turn-based. Combat unfolds in real time, although the action can be paused whenever players need to evaluate enemy behavior, issue commands, or coordinate abilities.
The wider structure combines a dark fantasy colony simulator with a party-based dungeon crawler. Settlements must be built room by room, providing bedrooms, dining areas, farms, workshops, and forges capable of supplying future expeditions.
Recruits arrive with individual races, backgrounds, personalities, talents, and combat statistics, and up to four can be assembled into a party built around weapons, magic schools, and complementary skill trees.
Death is permanent, making every journey into the procedurally assembled dungeon a potential loss of both equipment and an experienced adventurer. Status effects such as stun, bleed, burning, vulnerability, provocation, and summoned creatures provide the tactical depth during encounters, while resources recovered underground support further research and expansion at the settlement.
Rebel Roar – Demo
- Developer: Fridus
- Publisher: RockGame S.A.
- Platform: PC
- Demo Release Date: July 23, 2026
- Planned Full Release: Q1 2027
- Steam Page

An animal revolution against an invasive alien civilization provides the background for Rebel Roar, a roguelite deckbuilder set in the cyberpunk world of Animalek.
The occupying Sapiens have nearly destroyed the planet, leaving a growing resistance of cats, dogs, possums, and other animals to fight back against soldiers, mutants, household appliances, lawyers, chefs, and failed experiments.
Battles allow up to two rebels to fight together, with decks constructed by combining an animal’s personal cards with cards obtained from different class packages. The planned full game contains more than 500 cards, over ten decks, and twenty playable rebels, each carrying a unique special card and an individual story.
Progression also involves earning Liberation Packs, unlocking additional resistance members, exploring new regions, and spreading the uprising through different points of interest. The newly released demo offers the first opportunity to test those combinations before the planned Q1 2027 launch.
Rising Moonshade
- Developer and Publisher: Split Pupil Games
- Platform: PC
- Release Date: July 23, 2026
- Steam Page

Another full release from this week is Rising Moonshade, a medieval fantasy strategy game built around squad composition, limited resources, and missions with lightly randomized rewards.
Party members can be organized into several broad tactical approaches, including defensive attrition groups supported by clerics, mage-focused formations that protect spellcasters while they accumulate power, and ranged squads capable of triggering repeated covering fire.
Equipment progression covers nine weapon categories, each with its own forging path and tactical applications, while rare weapons can introduce exclusive effects capable of changing an established build.
Because skills and equipment do not always arrive in the ideal order, players are expected to adjust the squad around what they find before eventually facing the Demon Lord’s invasion.
War of Banners – Demo
- Developer: Jackto Studios
- Platform: PC
- Planned Release: Q4 2026
- Demo: Available Now
- Steam Page

War of Banners expands the nowadays familiar mercenary-company formula into a larger medieval sandbox where battlefield success can eventually lead to political power.
Players begin with a small group of soldiers and freely travel across an open continent populated by kingdoms, merchant guilds, holy orders, marauders, and other competing factions.
Mercenaries can be hired, equipped, trained, and promoted, although experienced soldiers may still die or betray the company. Turn-based battles reward the use of formations, terrain, high ground, flanking maneuvers, and encirclement.
The campaign gradually moves beyond contract work as players conquer fiefs, construct buildings, manage production, levy taxes, form alliances, and declare wars of their own. That combination of tactical combat, faction simulation, character progression, and territorial management makes this one of the more ambitious indie titles out there with the full release now planned for Q4 2026.
The Legend of Fancy Realm Remake – Demo
- Developer: USERJOY Technology Co., Ltd.
- Platform: PC
- Demo Release Date: July 22, 2026
- Planned Full Release: Q3 2026
- Steam Page

Let’s close this week’s roundup with The Legend of Fancy Realm Remake, which rebuilds a tactical RPG originally released more than two decades ago.
Its story unfolds across Faluosion, a fantasy continent still shaped by an ancient war between gods and demons, where relationships between nations and races are beginning to collapse once again.
The campaign retains a multi-path narrative in which decisions affect companion loyalty, major political events, character fates, and the ending ultimately reached. Battles and Character growth is equally flexible, with class transitions, hidden development routes, manual attribute allocation, and player-selected skills allowing units to move beyond their initial battlefield functions.
The remake updates the environments, portraits, effects, and narrative presentation while attempting to preserve the deliberate pacing and challenge of the original SRPG. Its free demo is available now, ahead of the planned Q3 2026 release.
