Between them, there is plenty for fans of tactical battles, party development, and demanding dungeon exploration.

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos
Naheulbeuk’s party may be written as a collection of fantasy stereotypes, but their individual skill trees and support abilities give you practical reasons to coordinate them.
Seven core adventurers, plus a choice of additional companions, bring different tools to turn-based encounters where environmental objects can also inflict status effects. Between fights, the dungeon contains traps, puzzles, and side quests.
The comedy is prominent, but so is the difficulty range: a simplified story mode sits at one end, with a much less forgiving nightmare setting at the other. This is the deal I would start with for a party-based tactical campaign.
Into the Breach

There is little left to explain about Into the Breach to a tactics audience. It remains one of the purest examples of deterministic turn-based design, where perfect information shifts the challenge away from probability management and almost entirely onto sequencing, displacement, sacrifice, and board-state optimization.
The Advanced Edition only strengthened an already exceptional ruleset with additional squads, weapons, enemies, and mission variables. At $2.99, this is less a recommendation than a reminder for anyone who somehow still does not own it.
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
Digital Eclipse’s remake updates the presentation without replacing the underlying game: it runs on the original 1981 code, and the Apple II interface can even remain visible while you play.
You create a party and descend into a trap-filled labyrinth to recover Werdna’s stolen amulet, fighting enemy groups along the way. Improvements to navigation, spellcasting, and party management make the rules easier to handle, but the enemies retain their old difficulty. This is a more convenient way to experience classic Wizardry.
Born of Bread

Born of Bread is fundamentally a Paper Mario descendant, so experienced RPG players will immediately recognize its mixture of timed inputs, companion switching, elemental interactions, and exploration abilities.
Its systems never become especially demanding, but the weapon/resource economy and buddy mechanics give combat enough structure to prevent it from becoming completely passive. The main appeal is its brisk pacing and presentation. At $3.74, it works particularly well as a lighter RPG between heavier ones.
Terra Memoria

A shortage of magical crystals and attacks by ancient machines bring Terra Memoria’s six companions together.
Their investigation moves between past and present, with turn-based combat sharing space with exploration, cooking, and environmental puzzles. Construction is a notable part of the adventure: you craft objects, alter the environment to solve obstacles, and build up a village.
Camps give the party room for conversations and practical tasks between destinations. The pixel-art characters and 3D environments establish a different mood from other RPGs.
ONE PIECE ODYSSEY

ONE PIECE ODYSSEY puts the Straw Hat crew into command-based battles divided across multiple combat areas.
Its Scramble Area Battle system makes enemy placement and character switching part of the decision-making, alongside rock-paper-scissors matchups. Random Dramatic Scenes introduce additional objectives, such as defeating an enemy with a particular character within a turn limit, for extra rewards.
Outside combat, individual crew members have exploration abilities: Luffy reaches distant objects, while Zoro cuts through certain obstacles. For One Piece fans, the attraction is having the crew’s abilities shape both combat and exploration, not simply watching familiar special attacks.
Wizardry 8

Wizardry 8 barely needs justification to old-school CRPG players. Its class/race combinations, hybrid builds, skill growth, formation system, spell schools, recruitable NPCs, and enormous amount of systemic interaction still make it one of the densest party-building RPGs ever made.
Its age is obvious in interface and pacing, but mechanically it remains far more ambitious than many modern dungeon crawlers. At $1.99, this is arguably the best value in the entire roundup for anyone willing to engage with early-2000s CRPG design on its own terms.
Dead Age 2: The Zombie Survival RPG
Dead Age 2 works best when treated as a resource-management RPG with turn-based combat rather than as a straightforward zombie RPG.
Party injuries, scavenging efficiency, equipment, faction relationships, crafting, base tasks, and permadeath all feed into the same attritional loop.
Combat itself is relatively compact, but decisions gain weight because mistakes consume resources that matter outside the encounter. At $1.79, it is especially easy to recommend to players who enjoy survival systems layered over traditional party progression.
Wander Stars

Wander Stars has one of the more unusual combat grammars among recent indie RPGs. Building techniques by chaining action, modifier, and elemental words effectively turns each attack into a small construction problem, with Spirit limits and cooldowns controlling how aggressively those combinations can be exploited.
The interesting part isn’t simply finding stronger words, but assembling a vocabulary that can address different enemy states without wasting resources.
At 50% off, this is one of the more interesting choices here for players actively looking for combat systems that do something structurally different.
Keep Driving

Keep Driving is one of those games where the individual encounters are almost secondary to everything happening around them.
You’re constantly watching your fuel, money, inventory space, and the condition of the car, because every decision affects how far you can realistically push the trip. Maybe you take a longer route because there is something useful ahead, but that means burning more fuel. Maybe you delay a repair to save some cash, knowing that the next problem could make that decision much more expensive.
Hitchhikers and new skills give you more options along the way, but you are always working within limited resources. That is really where Keep Driving becomes interesting: not in winning a single turn-based encounter, but in making sure you still have enough left afterward to keep moving. The discount is only 30%, but there really isn’t much else playing with RPG management systems in quite the same way.
Astria Ascending

Astria Ascending is probably the riskiest pick here, but also one of the more interesting ones if you enjoy messing around with classes and party setups.
There are main jobs, sub-jobs, stat growth, elemental weaknesses, and the Focus Point system to play with, so on paper there is a lot to optimize. The problem is that the game does not always push those systems hard enough, and the pacing can make some of that depth feel underused.
That is a big reason why opinions on it are still so divided. But at $3.49, I think it becomes much easier to recommend to anyone who enjoys experimenting with JRPG builds and does not mind a game that is a little uneven around the edges.
tERRORbane

tERRORbane is the odd one out here, since it is much more interested in breaking RPG conventions than actually following them.
Bugs, sequence breaks, dialogue choices, and things that would normally send you looking for the reload button are basically part of the progression. A lot of the fun comes from deliberately testing what the Developer does not want you to do, then seeing whether the game has prepared another branch, joke, or completely different section for it.
If you grew up with RPGs and immediately recognize the clichés it is messing with, most of the humor lands considerably better. At $4.79, this also matches its historical Steam low.
Master of Magic

Master of Magic is still largely about finding combinations that become ridiculous once wizard traits, spellbooks, race bonuses, heroes, units, and researched magic start interacting.
You can spend the early game expanding normally, or lean heavily into summons, enchantments, hero development, or spells that start changing the strategic map itself. Then you have Arcanus and Myrror running in parallel, which opens another set of decisions around expansion and access to races and resources.
The remake stays very close to the logic of the 1994 original, and that is probably exactly what determines whether you will enjoy it. At $15.99, it is back at its lowest recorded Steam price.
Dead Season

Dead Season works best when you start treating noise with care. Shooting your way out of a bad position might solve the immediate problem, but it can also bring more zombies onto the map and make the next few turns considerably worse.
That puts a lot of weight on movement, action-point efficiency, target priority, and deciding when spending ammunition is actually worth the attention it creates.
The campaign is relatively compact at 16 missions, so there is not the same long-term squad development you would expect from a full XCOM-like campaign, but the individual scenarios can put plenty of pressure on positioning and escape routes.
Loop8: Summer of Gods
Loop8 is probably the hardest recommendation here, but $4.79 makes its strange ideas much easier to investigate. The interesting part is how heavily the game ties relationships and emotional states into combat effectiveness.
What you do during the daily-life portion of a loop changes how characters behave and perform when the Kegai enter the picture, so preparation is less about grinding equipment and more about manipulating relationships before the fight happens.
Then the calendar resets and you get another chance to approach August differently. The problem is that the repetition can become exhausting long before you have fully explored those systems, which explains a lot of the Mixed reception. Still, at 88% off and matching its historical low, this is exactly the sort of flawed JRPG experiment I find much easier to recommend to curious genre fans.
