ARLINGTON, Virginia. Leonardo DRS demonstrated software updates enabling its fielded SGT STOUT air-defense system to defeat Group 1 and Group 2 small uncrewed aerial system (UAS) threats during a U.S. government test event, the company announced in a statement.
Several hundred SGT STOUT systems are already fielded, and the system was originally designed to counter Group 3 and larger UAS as well as fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, the statement reads.
During the test, the system expanded its capability against smaller UAS through changes to detection and fire-control software without requiring new hardware, Leonardo DRS says.
The SGT STOUT mission equipment package uses modular interfaces intended to support integration of additional sensors, computing capabilities, and effectors, according to the statement. Potential additions include passive detection systems, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled decision aids, edge computing, and new effectors.
Leonardo DRS says the architecture is also designed to support formation-based air defense through integrated sensing, cueing, and engagement capabilities for maneuver forces. The company is applying experience from fielded air-defense and counter-UAS programs to further software-driven system upgrades.
