The new Virtua Fighter project was teased nearly two years ago at The Game Awards 2024 ceremony. We’re only just now learning that Virtua Fighter Crossroads will be the name of this new entry.
Summer Game Fest 2026 debuted a new trailer for the game that focused entirely on the game’s single player story mode. Without foreknowledge of the Virtua Fighter franchise, viewers probably wouldn’t be able to guess that this was actually a fighting game based on what was shown during the segment.
This Virtua Fighter Crossroads trailer felt like it was showcasing a 3D beat ’em up rather than a fighter. Of course, those that have been paying attention to interviews might’ve expected something like this.
For a good while now, the developers have been talking about creating something outside the fighting game space within Virtua Fighter, specifically highlighting the worldbuilding of the game’s single player story.
It’s also important to highlight that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, famous for the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series, is working on Virtua Fighter Crossroads. The trailer should make this abundantly clear.
We’ve now recently heard that David Hayter, most famously known as the voice actor for Snake from Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series, is involved with the project. He has revealed that he will be overseeing the “world development” for Virtua Fighter Crossroads.
Indeed, David Hayter is being listed as a World Building Supervisor for Virtua Fighter Crossroads. Though primarily known as the voice actor for Snake, it’s also known that Hayter worked on the scripts for movies like X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Watchmen and Wolves.
It’s interesting to note, however, that Virtua Fighter Crossroads will be Hayter’s first time working as a writer for a video game.
“Finally, I can announce that I’ve been overseeing ‘world development’ on the epic new Virtua Fighter Crossroads for the past year,” announced Hayter on social media. “This is my first job, working as a writer in games. And what a game to start with. I think you will enjoy it.”
Fans have also been told that the writing team will consist of Brad Kane (As Dusk Falls, Ghost of Tsushima and You vs. Wild: Out Cold), Tsuyoshi Furuta (Like a Dragon, Judgement and Lost Judgement) and Shinji Yamamoto (Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4: Dancing All Night, Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon).
