If you’re not on the Zero Company train this week, don’t worry, you aren’t alone! There are tons of other RPGs on Steam with a much lower price point, especially with the impressive sales being offered.
More than ever, this time around you’ll find plenty of titles you may have never even heard of before, and I can assure you they’re worth far more than the few bucks it takes to add them to your collection.

HUMANKIND

With the recent announcement that a sequel is coming next year, now is a great time to check out Amplitude’s first foray into historical 4X strategy. If you’re familiar with the studio’s Endless games, you know that they blur the line between traditional strategy and RPG, and Humankind lets you weave your culture’s history into an evolving tapestry over time.
It’s as sandboxy as can be, especially with the addition of five years’ worth of DLC, and right now the whole Humankind experience is massively discounted on Steam.
Until 8 September, the Definitive Edition – which includes all the DLC – is just $17.98, down 82% from its standard price of $98.95. If you’re just looking to dip your toes in, the base game alone is $4.99, down 90% from $49.99.
My Lovely Empress

The My Lovely series has always focused on loss and bringing back the dead, but My Lovely Empress takes the concept to a much grander scale. In a realm inspired by Chinese mythology, you play an Emperor who still has a kingdom to run, despite mourning his wife. With the empire’s vast resources at your disposal, how far will you go to be reunited?
If you’re looking to start the Halloween season a bit early with a game that’s full of demons (both literal and figurative), Steam has My Lovely Empress discounted by 70%, from $19.99 to $5.99, until 8 September.
You can also get the full My Lovely trilogy at 75% off, with all three base games bundled at $10.81 rather than $42.47, or you can get all the DLC included for all three as well for a total of $23.36.
Wander Stars

If you’ve got a soft spot for ’90s anime, you’ll definitely want to check out this loving roguelite tribute. Its turn-based martial arts brawls let you build attacks by chaining words together, creating combos to exploit enemy weaknesses (and shout dramatically as you strike, of course).
You can try the demo for free, and Steam has Wander Stars listed at 50% off until 8 September, dropping the price from $24.99 to $12.49. It’s also available bundled with Cassette Beasts, another fantastic take on classic genre conventions, for $29.23 during the sale period, letting you save 28% off the total price of both games.
Breachway

There are tons of fantasy deckbuilders out there, so Breachway‘s spaceship combat is a refreshing change of pace.
It’s a perfect fit for the familiar gameplay loop of optimizing and building for combos, and even in Early Access Breachway has both the looks and the depth to stand out in a crowded genre.
Like most of Hooded Horse’s offerings, Breachway is a pretty safe Early Access purchase, and at a 50% discount on Steam until 5 September, it’s the cheapest it’s likely to be for a while, before or after 1.0. Normally $19.99, you can get the game for just $9.99, or bundle it with other Hooded Horse Titles like He Is Coming to save even more.
Chains of Freedom

If you liked Miasma Chronicles but want something a little darker and more dystopian, Chains of Freedom could be your creepy, conspiracy-laden target. With hints of post-apocalyptic scavenging and hardbitten military tactics, it’s a sci-fi horror yarn that’s well worth a play.
Chains of Freedom goes on sale through Steam fairly regularly, most recently this past weekend. If you missed it, don’t worry – there’s a free demo available, and even at full price it’s a very reasonable $24.99. Besides, this is Steam we’re talking about, there’s probably another sale on the horizon in a month or two, if not sooner.
Shields of Loyalty

We’re in the middle of a renaissance for fans of classic Heroes of Might and Magic. Even leaving aside Olden Era and the recently-announced HOMM3 Remake, there are loads of indie games building on the series’ beloved gameplay style.
Shields of Loyalty is heavy on unit synergy, making positions and formations key to winning battles. Have your cavalry charge with their flanks covered by infantry, or set up an aura effect to buff your army at the right time, and you’ll just have scratched the surface of what you can do.
Shields of Loyalty is $12.99 on Steam until 5 September, a 35% discount from its standard price of $19.99. The Deluxe Edition, which includes the Soundtrack, is just a bit more at $15.06. The game is also available as part of a few different bundles, so there are plenty of options to add on with your purchase.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown

I feel like there’s a pretty big overlap between board game fans and people with a heavy dose of nostalgia for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (speaking as Exhibit A in favor of the theory, of course!) Strange Scaffold clearly thought so too, as Tactical Takedown isn’t just a grid-based TRPG featuring the Heroes in a Half-Shell; its miniatures-game theme with comic-book aesthetics makes it irresistible to gamers of a certain age who grew up with Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.
You can get TMNT Tactical Takedown for just $12.99 on Steam until 11 September, saving 35% off its regular $19.99 price tag. You can also get it bundled with Splintered Fate, a Turtles action-roguelike that is, like all the best TMNT games, best when played co-op.
Dead in Antares

For the right player, Dead In Antares has it all: management, survival, character relationships, important decisions, and, of course, life-or-death RPG battles. If that weren’t enough, its alien world and doomed intrepid explorers are brought to life with a vibrant, colorful art style that makes an already captivating story all the more memorable.
Dead In Antares is 30% off until 5 September on Steam, taking its price from $19.99 to $13.99. The real bargain, though, is in getting the complete Dead In series, including all the DLC, for just $23.65 this week; that’s a 63% savings off the bundle’s price of $63.69!
Battle Brothers

Battle Brothers is a game that’s fantastically easy to recommend, but you really have to know what you’re getting into. Here is an enormous, endlessly replayable fantasy sandbox where you recruit, equip, and train a band of mercenaries willing to do anything for coin, crafting your own story as you go and the world proceeds with or without you.
It’s also a game that will never show mercy or pull punches. Playing Battle Brothers means you’re going to see your squad die a lot, and occasional frustration aside, you’re going to love every minute of it.
This modern classic usually goes for $29.99, but until 6 September Steam has it discounted 70% to $8.99. At that price, it’s worth considering a DLC pack or two to expand Battle Brothers‘ already-impressive world.
Spellmasons

Crafting spells on the fly is always a fun time, and Spellmasons lets you mix, match, and combo with aplomb. Coming up with a tricky new spell isn’t just intensely satisfying; it’s also necessary since it’s just you and your magic against the hordes of foes the game throws at you. You can also play co-op, slinging spells with friends for added chaos!
Spellmasons is best with the Runesmith DLC, which adds even more crafting options. Luckily, both are on sale via Steam until 4 August, and bundled together they come to a total of $10.96, a savings of 56%. If you want to just stick with the base game, it’s 75% off, down to $4.99 from $19.99.
Dustgrave Sandbox RPG

Dustgrave is an ambitious combination of Baldur’s Gate and Caves of Qud. At first glance, it has the appearance of a traditional CPRG, but this game is committed to becoming a true, open sandbox where the world reacts to your decisions, large and small, while also changing around you through the natural course of events.
There’s still some time to go in Early Access, but if Dustgrave can stick the landing for launch, you won’t want to miss it.
If you’re looking to get in on the ground floor, Dustgrave is discounted 35% on Steam until 7 September. It normally goes for $21.99, so during the sale you can get it for $14.29, or bundle it with some of Innervoid’s other titles!
Xenonauts 2

Speaking of Early Access, Xenonauts 2 came out of EA this spring, and the full version is just the thing for the XCOM blues.
A bit grittier than its inspiration, Xenonauts 2 lets you wage an asymmetric war against an extraterrestrial invader, both on the strategic map and in dangerous tactical battles. As an added bonus, the game’s alternate-history timeline offers more what-ifs than just the arrival of the alien threat!
It’s easy to rack up the hours and get your money’s worth with Xenonauts 2 even at the full price of $39.99, but Steam has the game at 50% off until 5 September! You can get this spiritual successor to XCOM for just $19.99, or bundle it with other Hooded Horse titles like Shadow Gambit and the aforementioned Battle Brothers.
Urban Strife

There are a lot of zombie survival sim RPGs out there, so a game needs something special to set it apart.
Urban Strife has all the right stuff, from base-building to storylines and interacting with the world’s factions, but where it really shines is in combat. It uses a realistic ballistics model, tracking every bullet, shotgun pellet, and even grenade fragment to determine hits. On top of that, hit locations matter (it’s a zombie game, after all), making the physics all the more critical.
Finally out of Early Access as of July, Urban Strife is well worth a look for any zombie fan. Steam has it discounted 30% until 7 September, taking it from $34.99 down to $24.99, and it’s also available bundled with WW2 tactical RPG Forgotten But Unbroken.
Edge of Eternity

After the emergence of Clair Obscur, it’s time to take a look at other French RPGs that may have flown under the radar. Edge of Eternity feels a lot more like a traditional JRPG, both in its overall look and its combat, but that’s not a bad thing; in fact, it evokes classics from studios like Square Enix and Mistwalker, to the point where playing it in 2026 feels like finding a forgotten gem.
The advantage to discovering Edge of Eternity later, of course, is that it’s frequently on sale. Steam has it listed at just $4.49 until 5 September, an 85% discount off its regular price of $29.99. A full-sized JRPG for less than $5 is a hard deal to pass up!
Hellslave

With a name like Hellslave, you’d expect a game that’s full of the dark and demonic, and this one delivers.
Your character sells their soul for the power to save the world from a demonic invasion, fighting hellfire with hellfire. With a big skill tree and plenty of monstrous foes on whom to test your new powers, Hellslave is devilishly satisfying to play.
The recent release of Hellslave II means there’s more reason than ever to try the original, which is just $2.99 on Steam until 10 September – an 85% discount from its usual $19.99 price tag. At that price, you might consider just getting the two games bundled together for $18.38, saving 43% in total and getting two dark fantasy adventures to embark upon.
Terra Memoria

If you’d prefer something cozy and colorful, Terra Memoria is a JRPG that’s easy to fall in love with. Following the adventures of six friends, you’ll explore a mysterious world and build out your home village. Between puzzles, minigames, and of course combat, you’ll always have something to do in this charming story.
Terra Memoria has a free demo available, and the full game is 75% off through Steam until 10 September. It normally sells for $19.99, but you can get it for $4.99 or get the Deluxe Edition (which includes the soundtrack and artbook) for $2.38 more.
West of Loathing

If West of Loathing seems like the kind of browser-based fare you might have played in the 2000s… that’s because it is. It’s the sequel to Kingdom of Loathing, a parody stick-figure RPG that’s been going since 2003, and West has all the bizarre, low-budget humor of its predecessor in a wild-west setting. Playing it is like a time capsule to the heyday of sites like Newgrounds, and it’s also a genuinely good game.

Decktamer

Decktamer has some familiar roguelike deckbuilding mechanics, but you’ll never earn a new card just for winning a combat. Instead, you need to catch enemy cards mid-battle, Pokemon-style! Weakening a card makes it easier to catch, but if you destroy an enemy card, it’s gone for good, and you won’t be able to add it to your deck.
It’s a neat spin on two different styles of gameplay, and Steam has Decktamer at 40% off until 5 September. Not only can you get it for $9.59 rather than its usual $15.99, but you can also find it in a bunch of different bundles.

It might seem quaint now with over a decade of hindsight, but Knights of Pen and Paper is just such a fun, simple concept that it works over and over again.
It’s a traditional fantasy RPG, yes, but you aren’t just playing characters – you’re playing a group of friends playing those characters around a table. A hero might have different traits based on who their player is, and a different Game Master can alter the fate of the entire party!
Knights of Pen and Paper and its sequel are basically modern classics at this point, and if you get them bundled together on Steam, you can save 35% off the whole thing. That’s both games and all DLC for just $18.18, compared to $27.96 if you buy them individually.
