Joss Mooney is breaking down one of the most frustrating parts of getting lean: stubborn lower belly fat. In a YouTube video, Mooney explains why this area can remain even when someone is training and dieting consistently, and why simply eating less or doing more cardio is not always the answer.
His approach focuses on creating the right environment for fat loss through training, nutrition, recovery, sleep and consistency.
Your Body Doesn’t Lose Fat Evenly
According to Mooney, the body does not lose fat evenly across every area. For many men, the lower stomach, lower back and hips can be among the last areas to lean out.
As body weight drops, the face, arms and chest may become noticeably leaner while the lower stomach remains. Mooney says this does not necessarily mean something is wrong.
“You’re not behind. You’re just impatient,” he explains, emphasizing that getting significantly leaner can take months of consistent effort.
Don’t Push Your Calorie Deficit Too Far
Mooney warns against drastically reducing calories while training six or seven days per week and adding more cardio. He argues that constantly pushing harder can increase stress and negatively affect recovery.
Instead, he recommends training hard three to four times per week before stepping away from the gym and allowing the body to recover.
“It’s not that you’re lacking effort. They’re applying it in the wrong direction,” Mooney says.
The focus should be on sustainable progress rather than trying to force fat loss as quickly as possible.
Build Muscle and Improve Your Lifestyle
Mooney also highlights building muscle as part of improving how the body handles carbohydrates. Rather than eliminating carbs completely, he recommends eating real food and avoiding heavily processed choices.
Sleep is another key part of his approach. He recommends seven to eight hours per night, along with a consistent routine and efforts to reduce stress from work, relationships and other areas of life.
The idea is to create habits that support training and recovery instead of constantly adding more workload.
Stay Consistent Long Enough to See Results
Mooney suggests that getting from a higher body-fat level to around 10–12% can take roughly 20 to 30 weeks of consistent execution. The problem, he says, is that many people change their approach or quit after only a few weeks because they do not see the results they expected.
His solution is to stay the course and build a system that can be repeated week after week.
Create an Environment for Fat Loss
For Mooney, losing stubborn lower belly fat is less about finding a magic exercise and more about getting the fundamentals right.
“It’s very simple. It’s not easy, but it’s simple,” he says, pointing to consistent training, adequate nutrition, recovery, sleep and stress management as the foundation for long-term progress.
