Today we demonstrate two techniques used historically for making decorative scrolls on some Renaissance swords, especially Zweihanders typical of Landsknecht mercenaries of the 16th century. One technique involves cutting a slit and bending into a scroll and the other is done by separately forging a scroll and then welding it to the piece. You can tell which technique was used on historical pieces by the shapes of the scrolls and the bars they are attached to.
