The biggest change is the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar. Flight III was built around this radar, along with upgrades to the ship’s electrical power and cooling systems. The Navy says these changes provide significantly greater detection and tracking capacity, particularly for integrated air and missile defense.
That matters because a destroyer’s weapons are only as useful as its ability to find, identify, track, and engage threats. Think of SPY-6 as giving the ship a much sharper set of eyes while Aegis acts as the brain coordinating the response.

The basic Arleigh Burke design also brings a serious weapons package. What really pushes Flight III toward the top is balance. Zumwalt is larger and more specialized, but Flight III is designed to deliver powerful air-defense and multi-mission capability across the fleet.

At 610 feet long and about 15,995 metric tons, Zumwalt is dramatically larger than the Arleigh Burke design. Yet its most interesting feature isn’t its size. It’s what the Navy did with that extra space. The ship was designed around a stealthier hull and superstructure, an integrated electric propulsion system, and substantial room for future weapons and computing systems.

The numbers are unusual for a destroyer. Zumwalt’s integrated power system can generate approximately 78 megawatts, while its propulsion system uses electric motors. That gives the ship an enormous electrical reserve compared with conventional surface combatants, a useful advantage as modern sensors and directed-energy or other advanced weapons demand more power.
Its weapons architecture is equally distinctive. The class has 80 Peripheral Vertical Launch System cells, fewer than the 96 cells found on an Arleigh Burke, but the Zumwalt’s launch cells are physically larger and were designed with future weapons in mind.

The Flight IIA design entered service as an evolution of the original Arleigh Burke class. Its hull was lengthened to about 509.5 feet, and the design added a dual helicopter hangar, allowing it to support two MH-60 helicopters. And there’s an underrated advantage: upgradability. The Navy has continued modernizing Flight IIA ships rather than treating them as yesterday’s technology. The first Arleigh Burke, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51), entered service on July 4, 1991. The original Flight I ships and subsequent Flight II variants were built around the Aegis Weapon System, combining phased-array radar, missile launchers, anti-submarine sensors, and multiple weapons into one integrated combat architecture.
Their basic numbers are still respectable. Flight I and II ships measure about 505 feet long, can exceed 30 knots, and use a 96-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launch System. But here’s the fascinating part: the original design was built with longevity in mind. The Navy has continuously upgraded the DDG-51 family with newer sensors, weapons, and support systems rather than treating the ships as disposable technology.
That doesn’t make every Flight I/II ship equal to a Flight III. It shouldn’t. The newer variant has a much more capable SPY-6 radar and other major improvements.

The Arleigh Burke class entered service in 1991, yet the Navy has continued upgrading the design with newer sensors, weapons, combat systems, and support equipment. That longevity is remarkable for a warship built around technology that is more than three decades old.

This matters because a destroyer does not fight with the technology it launched with. Radar systems can be replaced. Software can be rewritten. Electronic warfare equipment can evolve. Weapons can be introduced without rebuilding the entire ship from scratch.
The Navy’s Aegis architecture has been particularly important here. Arleigh Burke destroyers combine Aegis with the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System, advanced anti-submarine systems, air-defense missiles, and Tomahawk land-attack missiles.
