The Octagon returned to Australia for today’s UFC Perth event, and four fighters wound up taking home $100k bonuses.
This morning’s fight card was headlined by a key welterweight contest featuring former champion Jack Della Maddalena taking on rising division contender Carlos Prates. The highly anticipated showdown resulted in a coming out party for the Brazilian known as ‘The Nightmare’. Prates was able to get the better of Della Maddalena in the standup right from the opening horn, blasting the Aussie with low kicks, knees and heavy punches. After nearly finishing the fight in the late stages of round two, Carlos Prates proceeded to drop ‘JDM’ on three occasions in round three, this before ultimately finishing him off with ground and pound strikes (see that here). The impressive victory puts Prates right into title contention, as he is now 5-1 over his past six fights, with all 5 wins coming by way of KO/TKO.
UFC Perth was co-headlined by a lightweight bout between Quillan Salkilld and Beneil Dariush. The contest proved to be a short-lived affair, with ‘The Minority Destroyer’ dropping and finishing the 36-year-old veteran Dariush in the opening round (see that here).
Following the conclusion of today’s event, UFC officials announced at the post-fight press conference that four fighters would be taking home performance bonuses.
Fight of the night: Heavyweight fighters Brando Pericic and Shamil Gaziev each pocketed $100k for their thrilling war on today’s UFC Perth main card. Pericic ultimately won the contest by knockout in the late stages of round two.
