Elbit Systems has received a contract worth approximately US$170 million from Israel’s Ministry of Defense. The company will establish and operate a modern training and simulation center for the artillery corps of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) over a period of 15 years. The project focuses on the introduction of the ROEM self-propelled howitzer and the LAHAV rocket launcher.
The new center is intended to support the introduction of two systems into the artillery corps: ROEM, also known as SIGMA, and LAHAV, the Israeli designation for Elbit Systems’ PULS rocket launcher system.
ROEM is a self-propelled artillery platform, while LAHAV is designed for the deployment of precision-guided rockets. The simulation center will prepare crews and other personnel for operating both systems.
Simulators, Classrooms and AI Capabilities
Elbit Systems will be responsible for developing and providing the training infrastructure. This will include mission simulators, driving simulators, classrooms and specially equipped training areas.
The technical equipment will combine simulation technologies, automation features and AI-based applications. It will also include specialized solutions for driver training.
In addition to establishing the center, the contract covers the delivery of training programs as well as maintenance and support services throughout the entire contract period.
Reduced Training Requirements and Equipment Wear
The simulation-based training is intended to improve the operational readiness of the artillery corps and accelerate personnel qualification. At the same time, it is expected to make training operations more efficient and reduce resource consumption.
Another advantage is the reduced strain on operational platforms. If crews can initially practice certain procedures in simulators, the actual artillery systems do not need to be used as frequently for training purposes. This can help reduce wear and tear on vehicles and weapon systems.
Boaz Cohen, General Manager of Elbit Systems Land & Armaments, described ROEM and LAHAV as key components of the future Israeli ground forces. According to Cohen, the project demonstrates the company’s ability to provide integrated training solutions combining infrastructure, simulation technology and long-term support.
Elbit to Operate the Center for 15 Years
The contract is scheduled to run for 15 years. Elbit Systems will therefore remain responsible not only for developing and establishing the center but also for providing long-term training, maintenance and technical support.
The project combines the introduction of new artillery systems with the development of a dedicated training infrastructure. This is intended to enable the Israeli armed forces to systematically prepare personnel and crews for operating ROEM and LAHAV without having to conduct every stage of training using operational platforms.
