Glover Teixeira has discussed what really happened to Raoni Barcelos at UFC Vegas 121. Barcelos locked horns with Raul Rosas Jr. last month in the main event of the aforementioned fight night, and things were going as planned for the Brazilian.
However, in the fifth round, when Barcelos just had to survive to get his hand raised, he suddenly went unconscious just as Rosas Jr. took him down.
Check out the incident below:
Right after that, Barcelos was taken to a Level 1 trauma centre, where they ran several tests. His doctor later told fans that the 39-year-old lost consciousness due to a sudden illness. Now Teixeira, who was present in Barcelos’ corner during the Rosas Jr. fight, has revealed why Barcelos lost consciousness suddenly and blacked out.
As per the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Raoni Barcelos’ test results have revealed that he has a “traumatic brain injury,” due to which he most likely lost consciousness. On the Overdogs Brasil Podcast, he said:
“They went in and ran the tests. There was some swelling in his brain, so it was a traumatic brain injury, and maybe that swelling caused him to black out. It was the body’s defense mechanism. ‘Let’s shut this down because this guy isn’t going to stop.’ His mind was stronger than his body, right? He didn’t want to give up.” [h/t: MMA Fighting]
About Barcelos’ future, Glover Teixeira added:
“Of course, that’s going to be a conversation he’ll have with his family and everyone else. He needs to undergo all the proper tests to find out what happened, whether it really was a result of the trauma from the fight. It’s a decision that has to be made with a lot of care and caution.” [h/t: MMA Fighting]
Dana White on Raoni Barcelos’ UFC Future
Although Raoni Barcelos has promised to ‘come back stronger after the unfortunate TKO loss at UFC Vegas 121 and said he just fainted,’ Dana White has stated that the former needs more testing before deciding whether he should continue fighting or retire. White told the media earlier this week:
“I don’t want to make that call until he has more evaluation. I hate that, it’s horrible to see someone go through that. I’m so thrilled with my team; Hunter followed him behind the ambulance to UMC.”
