Phantom Fighter Goes Down During Athens Air Show Near Tanagra Air Base

A Greek F-4 Phantom was lost during an air show near Athens on Saturday. The two pilots aboard were lost in the incident, while no injuries were reported among people on the ground. The event was part of Athens Flying Week, bringing military and civilian aviation teams together from across the world.

The two-seat fighter was participating in the display at Tanagra Air Base, north of Athens, when it went down approximately two kilometers from the airport. Video footage broadcast by ERT showed the F-4 making a low right-hand turn only moments before it disappeared from view and a large fire erupted.

Emergency crews moved quickly as the resulting blaze spread toward a nearby forest. Eleven firefighting aircraft and helicopters were involved in efforts to contain the fire, while loudspeakers at the air base instructed people to leave the surrounding area.

An eyewitness described the sequence as startlingly brief, saying the Phantom had been airborne for no more than three minutes.

The F-4 Phantom has occupied a distinctive place in military aviation history, combining a long service life with a presence that remains instantly recognizable to aviation audiences. It’s appearance at Athens Flying Week reflected the enduring appeal of historic combat aircraft in modern air displays.
