This whole Street Fighter movie thing has been a rollercoaster. At first, it seemed promising. Then, the second weekend had us thinking it was a flop.
Even though the FGC is largely disappointed in the film, we have still been wondering: Will there still be a sequel? We may have some answers.
If you’ve seen the Street Fighter movie, you know the entire ending was a cliffhanger and a setup for a sequel. Nothing was resolved, which is a pretty lazy way to make a film. But I digress.
Despite the director’s clear intentions for a sequel, the box office numbers had fans wondering whether the studio would greenlight it after all. Well, it looks like we could be getting multiple Street Fighter films. You thought Hollywood had standards!?
Olivier Richters, the giant dude who played Zangief, spilled the beans a bit in a YouTube comment on October 25. A fan made a video stating that we didn’t see much of Zangief in the film, and he responded that the brief appearance was intentional, hoping to build anticipation for the sequel.
Under the name TheDutchGiant, Richters wrote: “Zangief here. When they asked me to play Zangief, it was all very clear. There was one goal: show a glimpse of Zangief and his power, so we all want more. All actors, including me, signed for 3 movies.
“If a sequel is made, Zangief will shine was the promise. Apart from that, you can’t expect from a 2-hour movie with so many characters for everyone to shine in the first part. But anyways, thanks for wanting to see more of Zangief!”
Does this mean there’s a Street Fighter sequel?
Of course, I can’t truly know what Legendary is thinking. But this does add a layer of suspense to the whole debate.
Signing a contract for multiple films is not really surprising in Hollywood. Many actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe signed for multiple films in advance. However, this doesn’t guarantee a sequel.
If a film has franchise potential, studios will offer these kinds of deals to the actors, especially lesser-known ones. This doesn’t mean the studio is obligated to make that sequel. However, the actor is obligated to return if the studio greenlights the sequel for the agreed-upon amount of money.
Street Fighter isn’t doing so well at the box office after a promising opening weekend. I guess word got out that it wasn’t great. However, it’s expected to make more money when it lands on streaming services. The $80 million film is expected to make a profit, although it won’t be a lot.
But that most likely means a sequel will be coming. Just my guess.
