Israel has successfully tested an upgraded version of its Arrow missile defense system, incorporating lessons learned from the recent war with Iran. The trial marks another milestone in the continued evolution of Israel’s multi-layered air and missile defense network, as the country accelerates the development of next-generation technologies to counter emerging regional threats.
Israel Successfully Tests Upgraded Arrow System
The Israeli Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) within the Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) of the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD), together with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), successfully completed a planned test of the Arrow Weapon System on Wednesday.
The launch took place from a test site in central Israel as part of the system’s multi-year development and upgrade program.
According to Israeli defense sources, the interceptor used during the test was an upgraded version of the Arrow system that incorporates lessons learned from the recent war with Iran.
Building on Operational Experience
Over the past three years, the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems have demonstrated what the Israeli defense establishment describes as unprecedented operational capabilities in air and missile defense.
The systems have intercepted numerous ballistic missile threats launched from both Iran and Yemen, including exo-atmospheric interceptions of ballistic missiles in space.
Israel’s defense establishment continues to upgrade the system to address evolving regional threats as part of a broader strategy aimed at maintaining the country’s technological superiority and anticipating future challenges.
The successful test marks another milestone in strengthening Israel’s ability to defend itself against both current and future missile threats.
A Key Layer of Israel’s Missile Shield
The Arrow Weapon System forms the upper tier of Israel’s multi-layered air and missile defense architecture, alongside David’s Sling, Iron Dome, and Iron Beam.
The system combines advanced threat detection and classification capabilities provided by the Green Pine and Super Green Pine radars with command-and-control systems, fire control technology, and interceptors capable of engaging ballistic missiles outside the Earth’s atmosphere at extreme ranges and altitudes.

Development of the Arrow system is led by the Israel Ministry of Defense, through the IMDO within the DDR&D, in close cooperation with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. Operational deployment is carried out by the Israeli Air Force’s Air Defense Command.
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) serves as the prime contractor for the Arrow program through its Systems, Missiles & Space Group, while its ELTA Group develops the radar systems. Elbit Systems provides the fire control system, and Tomer, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and the U.S.-based STARK Aerospace are key partners in developing the Arrow interceptors.
Senior representatives from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency participated in the test.
Defense Leaders Highlight Continued Upgrades
IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram said the successful test reflects the Ministry of Defense’s strategy of maintaining technological superiority while strengthening Israel’s independence in weapons production.
He added that, despite the success of the campaign against Iran, Israel remains in an emergency mode, accelerating interceptor production, expanding stockpiles, and continuously upgrading the system’s capabilities.
IAI Chairman Boaz Levy said the Arrow system plays a decisive role in defending Israel against threats from Iran and its proxies. He noted that the longstanding cooperation between Israel and the United States continues to generate advanced technologies that strengthen both Israel’s security and its defense industry while attracting growing international interest.
Head of the DDR&D Brig. Gen. (Res.) Dr. Daniel Gold described the successful trial as an important step in further strengthening Israel’s air defense capabilities. He said the latest upgrades combine lessons learned from recent combat operations with long-term planning to address future threats while preserving Israel’s technological advantage.
IAI President and CEO Guy Bar Lev said the test challenged the system against future threat scenarios and generated valuable data that will support development of the next generation of missile defense technologies. He emphasized that IAI’s systems play a central role across every layer of Israel’s air defense architecture.
IMDO Director, Moshe Patel, points out: “The War of Redemption proved the importance of the multi-layered aerial defense array that the Israel Ministry of Defense has developed and built over several decades. In this test, we completed an important and significant stage in the development of the Arrow Weapon System. In these new developments, we incorporated advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, the application of combat lessons, and a move into automated manufacturing. This test marks a significant step toward the continued equipping of the IDF with the system. The IMDO continues to innovate and ensure Israel’s security against both today’s and tomorrow’s threats.”
