The difference in caliber is more than a number on a specification sheet. The SCAR 16 was designed around the lighter 5.56mm cartridge and the role traditionally associated with assault rifles, while the SCAR 17 uses the larger 7.62mm NATO round and occupies a heavier battle-rifle niche.

FN SCAR Variants

The updated design also introduces an M-LOK-compatible handguard, revised controls and an AR-compatible pistol-grip interface. These changes may sound relatively small, but together they show how the SCAR has adapted to expectations that barely existed when the original rifle entered service.
