FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — Servicemembers, civilians, families and community members gathered Oct. 15 at the installation Community Club to honor three retirees whose decades of service strengthened the Army’s mission in the Caribbean and left a lasting impact on Fort Buchanan.
During the ceremony, leaders, coworkers and loved ones came together to celebrate the careers of Staff Sgt. Alexis Montañez, Ms. Maria “Angie” Lopez and firefighter Joel Pérez Vega, each recognized for their devoted service to the nation and the community they supported for so many years.
Garrison Manager Ulises Marrero opened the event by reflecting on the significance of their service. “Today is not just a celebration of retirement, it is a celebration of impact, legacy, and lives changed,” he said. He also thanked the families whose support made their careers possible. “You gave strength when they were tired, encouragement when challenges mounted, and love that made it possible for them to serve at such an exceptional level.”
Command Sgt. Maj. Everett B. Sikes echoed that appreciation. “Behind every successful mission, there are dedicated people who often work quietly, without recognition, making that readiness possible. You are three of those people,” he said. “Your service mattered. Your sacrifices mattered. And the difference you made will remain long after you leave.”
Each retiree received traditional Army retirement honors.
Montañez was presented a Certificate of Retirement, Certificates of Appreciation for both his service and his spouse’s support, a U.S. flag, and an Army retirement pin. Bouquets of red roses were also given to his spouse and mother in recognition of their sacrifices.
“After more than 24 years in the Army, there are a lot of people I want to thank, because I definitely didn’t get here by myself,” Montañez said. He reflected proudly on his recruiting career, adding, “Today, I can proudly say that 137 Soldiers joined the Army through my efforts… many of them from my own community.”
Ms. Lopez received a Retirement Certificate, a Department of the Army Certificate of Retirement, a Certificate of Appreciation, and a U.S. flag. Her sisters received white roses honoring their support throughout her 28-year civilian career.
“Projects eventually end. Buildings and infrastructure may change. But the people are what remain in our hearts and in our memories,” Lopez said. “Today, I leave with a full heart… but most of all, I take with me my Fort Buchanan DPW family.”
After 35 years of service, Joel Pérez Vega was honored with a Retirement Certificate, a Department of the Army Certificate of Retirement, a Certificate of Appreciation and a U.S. flag. For Pérez Vega, the ceremony marked the closing chapter of a lifetime of service — but not the end of his bond with Fort Buchanan.
“This community became part of my life, and I’m really going to miss this place,” Pérez Vega said. “I just want to thank everybody for the experience and for letting me be part of this great community.”
As the ceremony concluded, Marrero offered a final message on behalf of the installation. “You leave behind footprints of service that will not fade,” he said. “We celebrate your achievements, honor your sacrifices, and recognize the families who supported you every step of the way.”
The retirees formed a receiving line as attendees expressed congratulations to the three professionals whose careers helped shape the readiness and resilience of Fort Buchanan—now and for generations to come.
Fort Buchanan supports approximately 15,000 military personnel, including active-duty Soldiers, Army Reserve, Puerto Rico National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve members. The installation’s mission is to enable readiness and facilitate the deployment of forces anytime, anywhere.
