Conor McGregor has turned to a couple of UFC icons for inspiration as he embarks on another comeback journey.
McGregor thought he’d prove the doubters wrong at UFC 329 in Las Vegas when he met Max Holloway a second time. McGregor suffered an ACL injury in his first encounter with “Blessed,” but he pushed through the pain to score a unanimous decision win. This go-around, McGregor injured his other knee and there was no chance of victory just over a minute into the fight.
After undergoing surgery, McGregor has hopped on his X page to not only share optimism about his recovery, but to also heap praise on UFC Hall of Famers Georges St-Pierre and Dominick Cruz for overcoming their own injury setbacks (via MMAJunkie).
“What’s up folks. The Mac is back, baby,” McGregor said. “My knee is repaired, surgery was a success, and I’m on the road to recovery. That should tell you all you need to know about my mindset: straight into surgery, knee repaired, and on the road. Let’s go.
“I want to give a shout out to Dominick Cruz, who returned from multiple ACLs to recapture his bantamweight crown. Georges St-Pierre, multiple ACLs: I don’t know whether he returned after his second ACL, however, he’s doing backflips, movement is still stellar. Other notables in other sports, NFL – Tom Brady done it. (Adrian) Peterson done it. These are my motivation here, especially the fighting boys. Unstoppable baby – my mindset is unstoppable, unbreakable.”
McGregor has called the final bout of his UFC contract the “Last Dance.” While the Irish megastar initially had an April 2027 time frame set on his deal, things will likely have to be pushed back a few months. As far as who McGregor plans on facing to possibly cap off his UFC and MMA run, he said the only option is a trilogy bout against Holloway.
