- Supercell confirms Guardians will become independent from the Town Hall starting with TH19.
- Alex explains how merged defenses and progression could evolve in future Town Hall updates.
- Annual Town Hall releases are still intact but long-term progression solutions are being explored.
There’s always excitement when it comes to knowing about the next Town Hall levels in Supercell’s Clash of Clans. Town Hall 19 is definitely not as far away as it was when TH18 released, and as we inch closer to its debut, we get some new interesting details.
In the latest and final episode of Judo Sloth Talks 2026, Game Designer Alexander Roque (Alex) discussed the future of Guardians in TH19, merged defenses, progression, and how the team wants to keep the game fresh without making it overwhelming.
Guardians will move away from the Town Hall in TH19
The confirmation is that Guardians will no longer be attached to the Town Hall when Town Hall 19 arrives. Alex explained that Guardians were designed around the identity of Town Hall 18, especially with the meteor theme, but future Town Halls need their own unique identity. Because of that, Guardians will move out and exist separately from the Town Hall.
The developers are still deciding what form this will take. It could be a dedicated building, a flag-like structure, or something completely different. However, the important part is that Guardians are not being removed. Your existing Guardian progress will remain, and you will continue using them after the change.
Also, Guardians won’t be mandatory for reaching Town Hall 19. You will be able to upgrade your Town Hall even if your Guardians are still at Level 1. It is to ensure Guardians aren’t an “unlock requirement” that slows you down if you want to move forward quickly, but of course, they will remain useful for protecting your village, so this is on you.
Merged defenses will evolve as new Town Halls arrive
As more merged defenses are added, the team does not want every major defense on your village to become a must-have powerful structure. The current plan is that merged defenses like the Ricochet Cannon and Multi-Archer Tower will eventually become closer to regular defenses as stronger merged options are introduced.

The developers also confirmed that more defenses could potentially be merged away in the future, similar to what happened with the Eagle Artillery and Town Hall.
A new Town Hall every year remains the plan, but the future is complicated
A couple of years ago, Supercell had confirmed the new Town Hall frequency to be a year, and since then, both TH17 and TH18 have arrived as promised. Supercell is still following the plan of releasing a new Town Hall roughly every 12 months.
However, the topic was touched on because the team knows this approach could create problems in the distant future. Reaching Town Hall 30, Town Hall 40, and beyond could make progression extremely difficult for new players entering the game.
Alex explained that the team does not have a final solution yet, but ideas such as level squashes, merging progression, or different ways of handling Town Hall levels could be considered someday. For now, though, the yearly Town Hall cycle remains the current direction.
