Why are there more antennas on Svalbard than anywhere else on Earth? Svalbard of all places, where cats and childbirth are banned and there are more polar bears than people? This cluster of islands in the Arctic, one thousand kilometers from Norway, is key to everything from your weather forecast to your car’s navigation. At 78 degrees north, Svalbard is the highest-latitude satellite ground station on Earth and is a crucial point in humanity’s growing dependence on space. In fact, the polar regions — the Arctic and Antarctic — are both crucial to space access. The polar regions are the only…
Ukraine has a six-month window in which to seize the battlefield initiative from Russia and strengthen its hand for peace talks, a senior commander told Reuters, predicting a “turning point” was imminent after more than four years of war.Russian forces have made grinding gains since their full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but the advances have slowed this year and Ukrainian troops are increasing pressure on the battlefield to try to push them back.Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, who commands Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, one of Ukraine’s most respected fighting forces, told Reuters in an interview that he believes Russia’s…

T.J. Dillashaw was around Khamzat Chimaev for a good chunk of Chimaev’s UFC 328 fight camp, and the last thing Dillashaw expected when Chimaev fought Sean Strickland was for him to struggle in the cage—and with his weight cut.Strickland ended up winning the fight via split decision to regain the UFC middleweight title, but a lot of the storylines heading into the final 24-hour stretch had to do with how the previously-unbeaten Chimaev looked on the scale at the official weigh-ins.Dillashaw, who now owns Wild Society Nutrition, is well-versed on how weight cuts work being a former two-time bantamweight champion.…
The unsettling premise at the core of Liu Cixin’s 2008 novel, The Dark Forest, is that deterrence is more than a theory of international politics; it is part of a universal law governing the behavior of all societies. Western planners, policymakers, and other security thinkers concerned about potential future conflicts (or cooperation) with the People’s Republic of China should recognize the importance of this conception. A Chinese worldview that looks at national security, foreign policy, and international relations in this way has staggering implications for the future of geopolitics. Indeed, nearly 20 years after its first publication, the book stands…
