The advent of drone technology and the amazing advances demonstrated by Ukrainian military units has the feel of déjà vu. Authors have filled the media universe with breathless commentary describing how drones have fundamentally altered modern ground warfare. Considering Carl von Clausewitz’s admonition that warfare changes constantly, readers should not be surprised. But professional soldiers and serious students of warfare should view the highly touted changes created by drones with skepticism; they are nothing we have not seen before. The success of drones has obscured the fact that their use needs to be considered, deeply studied, and then incorporated into…
By CAPT Paul W. Nickell, USN, MA, MBA The Sailor is the Navy. No Navy is better than its Sailors. An unstructured, disconnected leadership continuum is a disservice to our Sailors and our Navy. The ideal Navy starts with the ideal Sailor. Now is the time for a coherent, connected Sailors First leadership continuum. Introduction Admiral Caudle provided a systematic build-up to framing his vision (priorities) for how our Navy will fight: C-NOte #1 on Sailors and their Quality of Life to C-NOte #2 on the Foundry and envisioned infrastructure necessary to generate and sustain naval power to the Worldclass…

Find out more at afa.org March 16, 2026, marks 100 years since Dr. Robert H. Goddard launched the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket. Goddard used a combination of gasoline and liquid oxygen (LOX) to propel a rocket for two and a half seconds, reaching an altitude of 41 feet and traveling over 184 feet down range. While this may seem like a small accomplishment, it is on par with what the Wright Brothers achieved with their first powered aircraft flight in 1903. Like the Wright Brothers before him, Goddard’s breakthrough opened the door…

Khamzat Chimaev does not stand out as a particularly impressive mixed martial artist to a former BMF champion who feels like Sean Strickland would have the skills to unseat ‘Borz’ from his throne if that fight gets booked. Jorge Masvidal was the ex-BMF titleholder in question, and the inaugural champ discussed this on the show that he regularly hosts, Death Row MMA. From that recent DRMMA podcast segment, with an excerpt posted to X account @RedCorner_MMA, Masvidal said, “I don’t think [Khamzat Chimaev] is all that good… Look at the [Kamaru] Usman fight – Usman was a 170 pounder, took…

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II. It has changed – and is still changing – how we understand modern ground warfare. Classical NATO doctrines, developed during the Cold War before being skilled and tested in Middle Eastern conflicts, were based on the expectation of air superiority and fast-moving armoured forces. The war in Ukraine has shown that strong air defences and the widespread use of drones by both sides have made deep offensive operations difficult, resulting in a mostly static front line, except in areas where one…
