State leaders who want to curb the increasingly violent arrest tactics of immigration enforcement agents in Minneapolis and elsewhere are struggling to push back. They’ve promised civil rights legislation that could offer alleged victims another route to courts, ordered up official tribunals to gather video and other records, or asked cities to refuse requests to cooperate with raids. But for the most part, states looking for concrete ways to push back find themselves largely hamstrung.Violence in immigration enforcement is on the rise. A federal immigration agent’s killing of Renee Good in Minnesota on Jan. 7 was one of half a dozen shootings since…
Ireland was politically divided in May 1921 subsequently becoming a Republic and a separate entity, Northern Ireland. Both territories have had fleeting experiences of indigenous fascism since the 1920s. My previous piece on archaeologist Adolph Mahr demonstrated how the Irish state (apparently unwittingly) promoted Mahr to the directorship of its National museum in 1934. He was a man who was by any definition, “a Nazi living in plain sight.” This article demonstrates that bizarrely, an anchor of the British state in Northern Ireland, Lord Londonderry, was at the least, grossly misled by Hitler and his cronies. Londonderry’s connections with the…

Inflection Points January 25, 2026 • 7:00 am ET Print this page By Frederick Kempe A senior European official, who was in Davos this past week for the World Economic Forum, refers to US President Donald Trump’s approach to Europe as “shock therapy.” After enduring several tough doses in the first year of Trump’s second term—on Ukraine, on tariffs, on Europe’s so-called “civilizational erasure,” and then on Greenland—the patient’s condition is shaken, the official says. But it is stronger. I asked this European official for further explanation. Shock therapy, after all, is more commonly a description of electrical currents treating…
Justin Gaethje promised he’d ruin the Paddy Pimblett party at UFC 324, and that’s exactly what he did across five hard rounds, pounding on Pimblett and earning himself an extremely definitive 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 unanimous decision win (highlights here). Paddy had his moments, but by the end of the fight “The Baddy” was a bloody mess while Gaethje barely had a bruise on his face.During the UFC 324 post-fight press conference, Gaethje discussed the win, what he did right, and what Pimblett did wrong.“This guy, he was trying to hurt me the whole time,” Gaethje exclaimed. “And if I…
Federal employees received high marks for their work. At the same time, the public also wants more from them, and federal agencies more broadly, especially around technology. These are among the top findings of a survey of a thousand likely voters from last August by the Center for Accountability, Modernization and Innovation (CAMI). Stan Soloway, the chairman of the board for CAMI, said the findings demonstrate at least two significant issues for federal executives to consider. Stan Soloway is the chairman of the board for the Center for Accountability, Modernization and Innovation (CAMI). “It very clear to us from the…
Federal agents on Saturday fatally shot a man protesting immigration enforcement activities in Minneapolis. The man was later revealed to be an employee of the Veterans Affairs Department, working as an intensive care unit nurse at the medical center in the city where he was killed. Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was taken to the ground by several federal agents before one of them shot him. Pretti gathered with other protestors as Border Patrol was conducting what it called a targeted operation to detain an individual it said was in the country illegally. Trump administration officials accused Pretti of approaching Border Patrol agents…
Iran Press TV Saturday, 24 January 2026 8:11 AM Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has criticized US President Donald Trump for attempting to create a new United Nations and be the sole owner of the international body. “Instead of fixing” the United Nations, “what’s happening? President Trump is proposing to create a new UN where only he is the owner,” Lula said in a speech at an event on Friday. Lula sounded the alarm about the new world order Trump is creating, warning that the international community is facing a “very critical” political moment in global dynamics, with…
Composite image created by Sara Herbst/RAND using multiple outputs from the Adobe Firefly image generator; photo by Dennis/Adobe Stock. Growing concerns about the societal risks posed by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems have prompted debate over whether and how the U.S. government should promote stronger security practices among private-sector developers. Although some companies have made voluntary commitments to protect their systems, competitive pressures and inconsistent approaches raise questions about the adequacy of self-regulation. At the same time, government intervention carries risks: Overly stringent security requirements could limit innovation, create barriers for small firms, and harm U.S. competitiveness. To help the…
