Sometimes, the Super Smash Bros. eSports scene can feel like it’s a bit isolated, even from the rest of the FGC. But we apparently have more reach than we thought. Well, at least Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma does.
Last week, JetBlue took notice of the Melee God’s very specific flying fantasy on X. And something cool may be coming of the exchange.
On October 29, Hungrybox opened up about a dream he had where “an airline sponsored Smash in 2027 and flew players around to tournaments.” This honestly wouldn’t be all too suprising of a dream for Hungrybox, who has been trying his best to support the struggling grassroots Smash scene with Florida locals and online tournament series.

In the past, having the money for flights has been a huge blocker for even the best players in Melee and Ultimate. You probably recall plenty of times when Smash players asked for a sponsor to fly them out or launched intense streaming campaigns to raise money for a flight.
Unfortunately, there have even been times when top players had to turn down big tournament opportunities because they weren’t given a flight they were promised. Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett won a community vote contest hosted by Nouns.gg, which was supposed to include a covered flight and hotel for Fast Fall. Nouns.gg allegedly failed to follow up with any information about booking and Wizzrobe decided not to go. By the time Nouns reps attempted to fix the situation, it was too late for Wizzrobe to attend.
In response to these ongoing troubles in the Smash community, big names like Ludwig Ahgren have attempted to sponsor players and provide flights for various events throughout the years. But wouldn’t it make more sense for a sponsor like JetBlue to provide flights? Right?
JetBlue responds to Hungrybox
After Hungrybox revealed his intimate dream on X, he called out JetBlue specifically: “We can put those fancy screens in the seats to good use, I promise.” Can you imagine playing Smash on a plane? Sick. But it definitely sounded like another far-fetched fantasy.
However, JetBlue responded! They wrote: “Have you seen our Nintendo-themed plane? DM us.”

Even Team Liquid owner Steve Arhancet saw the crazy exchange take place: “What?? There is one?”
Hungrybox hasn’t offered any follow-up to the exchange. It’s unclear if he DMd JetBlue or if the airline responded with anything of interest. But I am guessing they wanted to offer Hungrybox a ride in their Nintendo-themed plane for him to share on YouTube and social media.
The real question, however, is will JetBlue sponsor any less financially successful players for upcoming tournaments? Will they offer any flights to big Smash events? That’d probably be the biggest (and only) corporate sponsor Smash has, so it seems a bit far-fetched.
But we can dream, right?
