Alexander Volkanovski had his hand raised in a championship fight yet again at UFC 333, and at this point, there’s not a lot left for his fellow fighters to say.
Following his second-round knockout win over Movsar Evloev in Saturday’s main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, praise poured in for “The Great,” who broke a tie with the legendary Jose Aldo for the most featherweight title wins in UFC history with nine. Volkanovski also successfully defended his title for the second time in his second reign, and seventh time overall.
And he did it against an undefeated opponent in Evloev, who was 10-0 in the UFC heading into his championship opportunity. That record meant nothing once he stepped into the cage with Volkanovski. The more veteran fighter foiled Evloev’s attempts to take the fight to the ground and battered him on the feet before finishing Evloev with strikes in Round 2.
Former fighter and longtime analyst Kenny Florian noted, “There are levels to this game and the old lion is still hungry.”
