Nearly six years after its last expansion, the original Darkest Dungeon is preparing to reopen the doors of the Estate.
Red Hook Studios has announced The Fire’s Edge, a new DLC launching on August 18, 2026, for PC, Mac, and consoles. It will be the game’s first new downloadable content since The Butcher’s Circus arrived in 2020.
The expansion brings two familiar heroes back along the Old Road. The Runaway and the Duelist, both originally introduced in Darkest Dungeon II, are being reworked to fit the first game’s combat and progression systems.
The Runaway is a flexible damage dealer capable of fighting from several positions. Her arrival also introduces Burn as a new damage type, giving players another way to wear down enemies over multiple turns.
Her skills will work particularly well alongside parties built around Stun, Pull, Knockback, and Shuffle effects.
The Duelist offers a more technical alternative. She can move between party ranks while maintaining Riposte and switching between Aggressive and Defensive stances.
Her effectiveness will depend heavily on anticipating future turns, choosing the correct stance, and positioning her where she can take advantage of upcoming attacks.
The Fire’s Edge will expand more than the available hero roster. Red Hook has also confirmed three additional Hamlet Districts, the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp, along with powerful trinkets and several new trinket systems.
These include Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets, although the studio has not yet fully explained how each mechanic will function during a campaign.
It is an unexpected return to the game that established the series, particularly while Red Hook continues working on additional content for Darkest Dungeon II. Bringing two sequel characters into the original game should create new party-building possibilities without changing the familiar cycle of recruiting heroes, exploring hostile locations, managing stress, and recovering from inevitable disasters.
Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge will require the original game and can now be wishlisted on Steam. A price has not yet been announced.
