Ronda Rousey believes she can avenge her devastating 2015 loss to Holly Holm, but the rematch may never happen.
Rousey was back in the spotlight after having her comeback fight against Gina Carano in the MVP MMA 1 main event on May 16. It only took “Rowdy” 17 seconds to pull off the quick submission finish over Carano inside the Intuit Dome in Inglewood.
In the aftermath of Rousey’s successful comeback, Holm was interviewed by MMAFighting and was asked about a potential rematch with her former foe. “The Preacher’s Daughter” said she’d be open to the fight, but she doubts it’ll ever come to fruition.
During an appearance on “Up and Adams,” Rousey expressed her belief that she could run through Holm in a rematch. Don’t count on ever seeing part two, however (via MMAFighting).
“I said I’m retired, A and B, I think that I am a completely different fighter now. I would clean her clock and definitely now that I got that new medication,” Rousey said. “I took it before. I was diagnosed with cortical spreading depression, which was always happening in my last fights and basically why I was like I need to stop. I thought my concussions were catching up to me.
“This is the first fight where I was able to take it and when I spiked my head into the mat, that’s exactly the kind of thing that would have set me off before. I would have lost big chunks of my vision and it didn’t come back at all. It ended up working perfectly in a live situation.”
Rousey then insisted that the knockout defeat to Holm no longer bothers her. She also said that the loss doesn’t define her career or diminish her accomplishments.
“I think I definitely have the ability and the opportunity to be able to f*cking clean her clock and rewrite all of that but it’s no longer important to me anymore,” Rousey said. “It doesn’t haunt me. It’s not the most important thing in my life and these people’s perceptions and knowing how great I am and all this stuff.”
Holm was a massive underdog going into her UFC women’s bantamweight title fight against Rousey in the UFC 193 main event. When Rousey struggled to get Holm to the ground, that marked the beginning of the end. Holm landed a head kick in the second round that knocked “Rowdy” out. It was the first loss of Rousey’s pro MMA career.
