Mortal Kombat 2 is currently viewable at the movie theaters. In just three days, it was able to generate $63 million worldwide, nearly making back the $80 million in production costs within that span of time.
Prior to the film hitting the theaters, the studio was already anticipating success considering that it was revealed that Jeremy Slater had already begun writing the third script. Evidently, the studio wanted to make Mortal Kombat into a trilogy.
However, it would seem that their ambitions extend even further than that. Jeremy Slater recently spoke with Variety and revealed that they have plans to bring in dozens of characters in future films.
“I know exactly which new characters we’re bringing in, but it’s way too early to tell people at this point. We’re also being really receptive to the fan base. Todd Garner has maintained such a great relationship with the “Mortal Kombat” fan base and keeping a dialogue open in terms of “Who are you dying to see in live action?” said Slater.
“We have that feedback to take into consideration, but we also have to balance that against the story needs of where we ultimately want to take it and what we’re building toward. I have dozens of characters that I want to bring into live action.”
Assuming Mortal Kombat is able to maintain the sort of momentum that the studio is anticipating, these characters won’t stop coming just after the third film. Indeed, Slater is envisioning a fourth, fifth and even sixth entry to the Mortal Kombat movie franchise that they’ve started.
“Some of them are on deck next, and some of them are being saved for a hypothetical 4, 5 or 6. In success, we will get to as many of the classics as we possibly can, but we always want to be careful to never overload the audience.”
