Sean O’Malley believes his next fight will be for the title.
O’Malley returned to the win column at UFC 324 on Saturday as he picked up a decision win over Song Yadong. Following the win, O’Malley called out Petr Yan, as he believes a rematch for the belt makes a lot of sense. However, O’Malley believes Merab Dvalishvili could get the shot, and if he does, O’Malley said he will wait for the winner for one simple reason: money.
“I want Petr Yan. The thing is, if I would make more money fighting someone else, I’d want that. The amount of money I was making as a champion compared to not champion is significant,” O’Malley said to Ariel Helwani. “I was making a lot more money as a champion. That’s what I want next. I want Petr Yan next. I want the belt next.
“It makes it that much sweeter that it’s a rematch, it was a close fight before. Petr for the rematch is what I want. If they go Merab vs. Petr, I wait. If Merab wins, then we figure out what’s next, if Petr wins, that is what next.”
O’Malley is hopeful he can leapfrog Dvalishvili for the next title shot as he believes him vs. Yan makes a lot of sense. He also thinks it is possible that the UFC goes in that direction.
Sean O’Malley plans to renegotiate his contract after UFC 324
Although O’Malley said he is making way less money as a non-champion, he does plan to renegotiate his contract. O’Malley said he has two fights left on his deal and believes it’s a perfect time to re-up, especially if he gets the title shot.
“I feel like I will probably renegotiate before my next fight. I’m hoping (it’s more money),” O’Malley said.
Sean O’Malley is 19-3 and one NC as a pro following his win over Song Yadong at UFC 324.
