Tehran, IRNA — Jordan has deplored a recent controversial statement by the US ambassador to Tel Aviv, strongly condemning Mike Huckabee for justifying Israel’s expansionist agneda, as well as the regime’s illegal and illegitimate occupation and annexation of Palestinian lands.
In a statement on Saturday, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are the occupied Palestinian territories and the only way to achieve a just peace in the region is to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state.
The statement followed Huckabee’s contentious remark in an interview with American commentator Tucker Carlson that Israel’s control over the West Bank and even parts of West Asia is acceptable to the United States.
He also claimed that Israel had the right to extend its grip on lands from the Nile to the Euphrates, adding, “It would be fine if they [Israelis] took it all.”
Amman clarified, however, that the claim of sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories, or the stance to legitimize their occupation, is rejected and is contrary to international law.
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry also urged the international community to take steps to establish an independent Palestinian state and guarantee the rights of the Palestinian people to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
Huckabee, who represents a traditional conservative movement that strongly supports the Israeli regime, especially in right-wing evangelical circles in the United States, is a supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and its idea of a “Greater Israel” with expanded land grab.
