FMV press release – Translated by Naval News
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed a contract with the supplier Freire Shipyard for the procurement of four new logistic support vessels. The new vessels will strengthen the Navy’s sea-based mobile logistics capability and will be delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces in 2030.
“The procurement of the logistic support vessels began in the summer of 2024, and with the contract signing we are now entering the production phase. The project strategy is to acquire a civilian vessel platform and subsequently integrate weapons as well as military command, control, and communications (C3) systems at a separately procured shipyard responsible for militarisation,” says Carl Johan Widmark, Project Manager at FMV.
Platforms for Sea-Based Mobile Logistics
The logistic support vessels are one of four new platform types included in the programme currently being implemented by FMV to support the Swedish Armed Forces in developing its sea-based mobile logistics capability.
The other platform types include:
- Workboats (intended for torpedo recovery and underwater operations)
- Harbour tugs
- Bunker vessels
In addition, equipment for the logistical support of submarines is being procured to further strengthen sea-based mobile logistics. The new materiel will be delivered progressively to the naval base battalions.
The new capability provided by the logistic support vessels will make naval logistics more flexible and less vulnerable.
