The rapid advancement of frontier artificial intelligence (AI) systems has created an urgent need to secure the infrastructure on which these systems run. As AI advances, so do its associated threats: Not only could malicious actors target AI infrastructure to steal model weights or disrupt operations, but a misaligned AI system could exploit vulnerabilities in its own infrastructure to bypass safety monitors or exfiltrate itself. To address this possibility, the authors surveyed 23 experts in early 2026 to determine whether formal methods—using mathematical techniques to reason about software behavior and, potentially, show that systems behave as specified—could meaningfully reduce risks…
When the Army launched its “transformation initiative” a year ago, lawmakers immediately implored service leaders to show their work as they made plans to buy new things and get rid of old ones, including the cost tradeoffs and a timeline. They didn’t get those answers, so House lawmakers have inserted a requirement for an annual report and briefing into this year’s defense authorization bill. On Thursday, the House Armed Services Committee completed its markup on the bill, adding detailed instructions for an annual update on the Army Transformation Initiative—and also the Army’s Transformation-in-Contact/Continuous Transformation efforts, requiring specifics on new capabilities and…
By RFE/RL June 05, 2026 US President Donald Trump said the United States will win the conflict with Iran either “militarily or on paper,” referring to the fitful negotiations with Tehran, and he suggested he could meet with Iran’s reclusive supreme leader “if it was to make a deal.” “We’re going to win one way or the other,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “It’s going to be militarily or on paper.” Trump also said he had no desire to meet with Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen since the outbreak of violence on February…

BALTIMORE — Lt. Gen. Paul Stanton is redefining the concept of teamwork at the Defense Information Systems Agency. The director of DISA said the interdependency of technology systems and the speed of artificial intelligence are driving this change. “By design, we have to put solutions together in a meaningful way, which means that those solutions are derived from different companies, which means that we have a dependency, our nation has a dependency, on your solutions working together that requires teamwork culturally. We all have to accept that,” Stanton said during a speech June 2 at the AFCEA TechNet Cyber conference.…
Japan and Indonesia have agreed to begin working-level discussions on the possible transfer of used Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Asagiri-class destroyers, marking another step in Tokyo’s expanding defense export policy and highlighting how Japan is tailoring naval cooperation to the specific requirements of regional partners. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Tokyo on June 5. According to Japan’s Ministry of Defense, Sjafrie expressed a desire to “materialize” defense equipment and technology cooperation, including the transfer of Asagiri-class destroyers. The two sides agreed to discuss training, maintenance, and operational support through a working-level framework…
“If it’s still leaking, it’s not empty.” I’ll never forget the words of my mechanic when my very first Subaru, a trusty 2010 Subaru Forester, began dribbling coolant all over my driveway. I, a used car expert, should have known better. I even bought the extended warranty, in case the head gaskets needed replacing. They started leaking less than an oil change after that warranty expired. I should have saved my money: the head gasket replacement cost about as much as the $1,100 Canadian dollar extended warranty package that I had otherwise wasted at the time. Subaru head gaskets in…
The U.S. Army plans to order thousands of next-generation, short-range air defense missiles to replace the aging FIM-92 Stinger. A new Army Request for Information seeks to identify companies that can deliver 11,000 Next Generation Short Range Interceptor, or NGSRI, missiles beginning in Fiscal Year 2028. The response deadline is July 6. The RFI asks companies to “provide projected unit cost estimates given a planning factor of 11,000 NGSRI missiles and 2,200 Control Launch Assemblies over a ten-year production period,” the document states. “As a planning factor, assume procurement of 200 missiles and 20 CLAs in year one (FY28) and…
