NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville Police Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a self-defense claim in a deadly shooting at a Madison apartment complex early Saturday morning.
MNPD reports that 22-year-old Alexia Stephens was fatally shot inside her estranged wife’s Gibson Creek apartment.
Officers responded to the complex on East Webster Street at 7:12 a.m. after the admitted shooter called 911. The shooter was identified as 21-year-old Jack Wade, who had been visiting the apartment at the time of the shooting, MNPD said.
Those at the scene told detectives that Stephens and her estranged wife shared a child and that Stephens had moved out of the apartment a few days before the shooting.
MNPD reports that the estranged wife told detectives that Stephens had come to her door and wanted to see the child. Stephens reportedly said if she wasn’t let in that she would shoot through the door.
When the estranged wife unlocked the door, Stephens came into the apartment and allegedly put her arm around the wife’s neck and pointed her gun at Wade.
Wade reportedly told detectives he shot Stephens after she pointed the gun at him.
After the shooting, Stephens was taken to an area hospital, where she died Saturday afternoon.
MNPD said the estranged wife and Wade were cooperative with detectives and gave statements at police headquarters.
“No charges have been filed at present as the investigation continues. Detectives will staff their findings with the District Attorney’s Office,” MNPD said.
