It’s a rough one for mobile FPS fans. Rainbow Six Mobile is shutting down on January 15, 2027, with Ubisoft confirming that the game will remain available until then. The next season will still launch as planned next week, but after that, the tactical shooter’s journey on mobile is coming to an end.
Rainbow Six Mobile had a lot going for it. It brought the core 5v5 tactical shooter experience to mobile, complete with operators, destructible environments, awesome maps, and team-based gameplay.
It also managed to build a community around the game, with Ubisoft highlighting 15 seasons of tournaments, strategies, videos, memes, and memorable plays. However, all these aspects weren’t enough to keep the game running. But why? Questions, surely, but I have my theories.
A launch after a long wait: How Rainbow Six Mobile was held back even before release
Rainbow Six Mobile was first announced in 2022, followed by multiple tests and delays before Ubisoft finally launched it globally in February 2026. That means the game will have had only around 11 months of global availability by the time it shuts down.
For a game that took years to reach that point, that feels incredibly short. This exact reason is why I can’t help but wonder whether the long development and release cycle hurt the game. By the time Rainbow Six Mobile finally launched worldwide, players had already been waiting for years, and maybe they weren’t that excited anymore.
The mobile market had also continued moving at a rapid pace, with plenty of other shooters competing for players’ attention. Still, there are new shooters being churned out time and time again. Maintaining the competition and dropping updates, while also retaining the player base, isn’t an easy task.
The game did attract a sizeable audience, with Rainbow Six Mobile recording around 6.75 million downloads in its first 30 days. The reach was there, but the revenue numbers weren’t promising for a game that was looking at a big audience, and I feel that wasn’t enough to keep the operations going.
The Division Resurgence also launched two months later, and maybe the close launches didn’t help R6M. Of course, these are just my takes. Ubisoft hasn’t specifically said that a lack of player interest was the reason for the shutdown, nor has it said anything about the revenue numbers.
