NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A self-defense claim is under investigation after a fatal shooting outside Bridgestone Arena, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD).
Metro Police say the incident occurred at 2:20 a.m. on Oct. 18, when Adrian Rivas-Romo, 23, was shot during an argument with pedicab driver Christopher Jones, 21, over the cost of a fare.
Jones called 911 and stayed at the scene, identifying himself as the shooter, police say. Detectives say they recovered his pistol.
According to Metro Police, Rivas-Romo and friends were using two pedicabs to return to their hotel. Officers say Rivas-Romo’s friend got into an argument with one driver that led to a stop outside the arena. Jones also stopped since both cars were traveling the same route to the hotel, police say.
Jones allegedly forced the group to exit and refused to carry them any further, according to MNPD. A physical altercation followed, and Jones claimed he was punched in the back of the head by one of Rivas-Romo’s friends, police say.
Jones claims Rivas-Romos came towards him quickly, resulting in him firing his weapon, officers say.
Rivas-Romo was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to MNPD.
Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and are working closely with the District Attorney’s Office on potential charges.
