CLIFTON, New Jersey. L3Harris Technologies completed production of the first 35 Viper Shield electronic warfare and countermeasure systems for F-16 fighter aircraft, the company announced in a statement.
Viper Shield is designed to detect, identify, and counter electronic threats and can be installed as either an internal system or an external pod, the statement reads. L3Harris has also assembled its first pod using production hardware and is preparing for full-rate production of 233 systems currently on order from eight allied countries.
The software-defined system is designed for Block 70/72 F-16 aircraft and is interoperable with the APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar while remaining compatible with earlier F-16 variants, the company says. Its architecture incorporates commercial off-the-shelf technology and is intended to reduce system size and weight while supporting future upgrades, according to the statement. Participating countries have invested about $1 billion in development, laboratory testing, flight testing, and production of the system.
