The first shipment of twenty-eight K2 Black Panther main battle tanks ordered by
Poland in August 2025 was received at a Polish port on 25 August 2026.
These are the initial delivery of a total of 180 K2s under the 9-trillion-won (US$6.5 billion) contract signed with South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem. The balance of the order includes 116 tanks configured in the K2GF version, which will continue to arrive through 2027, and 64 in the customised Polish variant, the K2PL—the last will be delivered between 2028 and 2030. The order also includes twenty-four K2 bridge launcher vehicles, thirty-one recovery vehicles, and twenty-five combat engineer variants.
This latest shipment brings the Polish K2 fleet to 208 units following the 180 tanks acquired in 2022.
In addition, work is continuing on the domestic support centre being established by the Polish state enterprise Bumar-Labedy. This facility is intended not only to provide maintenance and support to the Polish K2 fleet but also to conduct final assembly of the K2PL tanks. It will also integrate locally supplied components, enhanced armour, counter-drone systems, and active-protection systems (APS).
The new K2s will be assigned to the Polish 16th Mechanised Division, located in the country’s northeastern region bordering Russia and Belarus.
The initial K2 provided by Hyundai-Rotem were the version in production at that time. The K2GF and subsequent K2PL are advanced, customised versions tailored to the operational requirements of the Polish Land Forces. It includes the stabilised 120mm L/55 smoothbore gun, a bustle-magazine automatic loading system, a 12.7mm Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. An advanced fire control system integrates a Pulse-Doppler radar, automatic target tracking, and laser rangefinders.
Protection is enhanced over the original Korean Army K2 with composite add-on armour and detached layered armour panels over the turret and hull. It also includes a hard-kill Active Protection System, a counter-drone electronic jamming system, Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), and an engine compartment bar/mesh cage. The Polish K2S have NATO-standard communications and is fitted with the Polish Battlefield Management Systems (BMS).
The K2 join the Polish Army’s inventory of US M1A2s and German Leopard 2 MBTs.
