A contract has been signed between Romania’s Ministry of National Defense and Rafael for the acquisition of the SPYDER system for protection against aerial threats
This is another selection of the SPYDER system by a NATO nation, positioning the system as a European standard. This marks the initial phase of a strategic framework agreement between Rafael and Romania, with an estimated value of over two billion euros.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd announces that Romania’s Ministry of National Defense (MoND) has selected Rafael’s SPYDER air defense system to protect the country against short to medium range aerial threats (SHORAD-VSHORAD), as part of a wide-ranging strategic agreement with an estimated value of over two billion euros. Last week, the initial order under the full framework agreement was signed. Rafael was selected through a tender held to supply Romania with a large number of SPYDER air defense batteries, a significant step in the national SHORAD-VSHORAD program aimed at strengthening the protection of Romania’s airspace.
The agreement covers the supply of the SPYDER system, including a complete solutions package with launchers, interceptors, radar systems, training arrays, and logistical support. Delivery of the systems is expected to begin within 36 months of the signing of the agreement, achieving initial operational capability based on extensive industrial cooperation and local production in Romania. Romania’s acquisition of Rafael’s SPYDER system reinforces its commitment to procuring advanced air defense solutions in line with NATO standards, while strengthening the industrial and strategic partnership between the two nations.
The current agreement represents a further layer in the longstanding partnership between Rafael and Romania. Over the past three decades, Rafael has supplied Romania with advanced systems in the field of tactical missiles (SPIKE), electro-optics, and communications across all branches of the country’s armed forces, the air, land, and naval forces, alongside additional operational capabilities, forming a solid foundation of mutual trust and operational compatibility. This agreement reflects not only technological alignment but also a deepening of the defense cooperation between the two countries.
Rafael Chairman of the Board, Prof. Yuval Steinitz, said: “The agreement with Romania is a strategic one that demonstrates Rafael’s technological leadership and enduring excellence in the field of air defense. We thank the Government of Romania for choosing the SPYDER system and welcome Romania’s entry into the community of nations that have chosen Rafael’s system to protect their citizens. As a leader in defense innovation, we will continue to contribute to the security of our partners through the development of the most advanced technologies and productive industrial collaborations.”
Rafael CEO, Yoav Tourgeman, said: “Rafael is honored to sign the largest deal in the company’s history and to provide another NATO nation with an advanced air defense system. Romania’s selection of the SPYDER system reflects the growing confidence of European nations in Rafael’s operationally proven air defense systems. Rafael is a global leader and a center of excellence for air defense systems that have been tested and proven under the most challenging operational conditions. Romania has been our partner for many years, and we are pleased to deepen the partnership and committed to full cooperation with Romanian industry through local production and with our partners across Europe.”
The SPYDER system is a mobile air defense system based on Rafael’s PYTHON and DERBY air-to-air missiles, operating as part of a multi-layered defense concept. The system is designed to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and precision-guided munitions. SPYDER’s modular and operationally proven design enables adaptation to both stationary and mobile missions, while its architecture and rapid response time provide effective protection of strategic assets even in complex aerial environments and changing operational realities.
SPYDER is a system with proven operational capability and a strong reputation, selected by leading customers around the world, including NATO and European Union member states. Thanks to continuous upgrades and its ability to adapt to changing missions, the system has become a cornerstone in protecting the skies of many nations operating in high-threat scenarios.
