Sentinel Photonics, the UK-based laser threat detection specialist, today announces the launch of LASERD NOMAD, the first of its range of vehicle-mounted laser warning systems. LASERD NOMAD is built for rapid deployment on armoured and soft-skinned military and security platforms.
NOMAD extends Sentinel’s proven LASERD technology to mobile operations, from boats to land vehicles. It delivers real-time laser threat awareness, giving crews 10 to 30 seconds to take defensive action before a strike or a precision-guided munition hits. Alerts are delivered via audio and visual cues on a rugged Android device running Sentinel’s Laser Detect application.
A threat-specific sensor architecture filters out civilian and battlefield background lasers, maintaining reliable performance in complex electromagnetic environments where false-alarm rates are mission-critical.
“Vehicle crews operating in contested environments face laser-guided threats they cannot see coming,” says Jackson White, CCO at Sentinel Photonics. “NOMAD closes that gap. It retrofits to any platform in minutes, operates without degrading vehicle performance, and delivers operationally validated early warning that gives crews a real chance to survive.”
Designed for the field
NOMAD provides continuous 360-degree horizontal and 150-degree vertical coverage with no blind spots, detecting rangefinders and target designators across the non-visible spectrum.
It easily integrates with existing vehicle systems via a walk-on fit or retrofits onto any platform, from Humvees to light patrol vehicles, without affecting performance or mobility.
With a low SWaP footprint, it weighs just 1.1kg, measures 200 × 160 × 100mm, and connects to the vehicle’s power outlet 5v to 24 and can plug directly into a standard USB outlet. It is IP67-rated and validated for harsh environments.
Validated performance
Field trial performance has been independently verified against military-grade designators and rangefinders at standoff ranges exceeding 4km.
Field trial results confirm:
- Designator detection: greater than 50m diffuse scatter at 4.3km; 10m off-axis at 4.3km
- Military rangefinder detection: 20m diffuse scatter at 4.3km; 5m off-axis at 4.3km
- Sensitivity: 30pJcm-2 or better across the full waveband
This means that platform crews will be alerted when in or near the targeting zone of designators or range finders, giving them valuable time to implement Immediate Action (IA) drills, such as emergency manoeuvre or the deployment of countermeasures, to enhance crew survivability.
Availability and support
LASERD NOMAD is available now through Sentinel Photonics’ global partner network, spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and North America. The system ships as a complete Platform Protection Device, including mounting hardware, vehicle power kit, end-user device, and the LASERD Laser Detect application. In-country training and remote or on-site support are included as standard. Software upgrades for continued system performance are provided throughout the product lifecycle.
