It’s already been about a year since Mortal Kombat 1 stopped receiving new content development, and the picture of what is probably coming next is looking even more clear now.
There was already some evidence pointing towards NetherRealm Studios actively working on Injustice 3 before, but a new apparent leak pointing even harder in that direction.
As spotted by MP1st, an artist at Warner Bros. Games may have inadvertently confirmed that a new DC fighting game is in development.
They claim the artist’s resume includes several projects they are reportedly working on between the previously confirmed Hogwarts Legacy sequel and Injustice 3 alongside two more unannounced titles.
This all comes after a couple of DC voice actors potentially leaked Injustice 3’s existence last year, so this latest turn of events is not the biggest surprise if it is indeed true.
DC’s new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran also confirmed they met with NetherRealm before then to discuss potential new game ideas too.
With the release cycle of alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice titles skipped with Mortal Kombat 1’s launch (and apparent underwhelming performance in Warner Bros.’ eyes despite continued sales), Injustice 3 does make the most sense for the studio to move forward with next.
There is still some uncertainty in the air regarding the future of NetherRealm and WB’s gaming sector in general with Paramount actively trying to take over Warner Bros. after Netflix backed out of the acquisition talks.
Assuming Injustice 3 is in full development now, though, we still probably won’t see the game officially revealed for another year or two at least still.
And of course none of this has been confirmed by NRS or Warner, so take it with a healthy grain of salt.
It will be interesting to see what the future of NetherRealm holds, but we have an apparently pretty clear picture of where they’re trying to head now.
