DESTINYbit’s turn-based mech RPG leaves Early Access on May 12 with a new Main Quest, a cross-platform launch, and a demo already available.
DESTINYbit‘s plans to conclude Steam Early Access at the end of May 12, 2026 marking the transition to a full retail launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store are rooted in the fact that the NITRO GEN OMEGA version 1.0 release builds upon a key feature that currently lacks completion; the Main Quest.
While a new Demo has been released that provides players with a glimpse of this new direction (and serves as a preview of the work towards the v1.0 milestone), the Demo represents the first chapter of the story that will serve as the anchor for the full retail release.
NITRO GEN OMEGA is primarily a sandbox RPG developed within the context of a world in which humanity has lost its war against the machines.
The few remaining humans survive atop elevated cityscapes and remote outposts; meanwhile, vast portions of the planet below are swarming with marauding AI and scavenging war machines. As a mercenary commander, the player takes on various contracts for these surviving human settlements while attempting to maintain both an operational crew and an operating mech in a rapidly deteriorating environment.

The “Spaghetti Anime” aesthetic established by Ravenna-based studio DESTINYbit (the developers behind Dice Legacy) helps encapsulate the gritty post-apocalyptic setting combined with dramatic character development and over-the-top mech action that NITRO GEN OMEGA seeks to achieve.
One characteristic that sets NITRO GEN OMEGA apart from a traditional mission-based RPG is how the game distributes time/attention among three main pillars: world exploration/travel aboard an airship, managing your crew, and engaging in combat.
Players explore a wide-open world continent aboard an airship, traveling between cities and outposts, searching out and investigating abandoned machine bases, responding to events, and accepting contract requests that enhance their reputation and help fund their crew’s survival.

As you travel throughout the world, players may hire new pilots who can join their crew; since they are described as procedurally generated, they will possess unique appearances, abilities, goals, and preferences.
NITRO GEN OMEGA employs a two-step process consisting of a Planning Phase and a Resolution Phase. During the Planning Phase, players create a timeline of potential actions to take prior to entering the Resolution Phase.
This phase is where all of the previously planned actions come to life in an animated battle scene similar to something seen in anime. When controlling the mech from within, players divide control of a four-pilot squad among themselves.

Each pilot controls a different component of the mech: one controls movement and evasion maneuvers, another executes attacks, another is responsible for providing support using tools such as coolants, and another utilizes utility items, including smoke or special attack maneuvers.
By dividing control in this manner, NITRO GEN OMEGA allows players to experience a single mech as if it were composed of multiple players working cooperatively in a party-based tactics game.
There is an emphasis placed on combat being high-stakes; therefore, injury, panic, crisis states, and mechanical failure can occur during battles and potentially disrupt the order of operations. Additionally, morale plays an integral role in maintaining a well-functioning team.
Fatigue also affects both pilots and mechs; while it is possible to rebuild and replenish mech components after battles, repairing damaged personnel is much more difficult.

Outside of individual missions, the airship serves as a sanctuary where players manage aspects of stress, fatigue, etc., on behalf of their pilots. Through cooking meals, training exercises, relaxation routines, scavenging supplies, or participating in other daily/after-battle activities, pilots may bolster their overall performance in combat or strengthen friendships and rivalries formed with other members of their crew.
Mech design is another critical element in the NITRO GEN OMEGA loop. It encourages finding better equipment not only for increasing survivability and overall power output but also for tailoring how a particular campaign feels during combat.
Version 1.0 is positioned as the culmination of NITRO GEN OMEGA‘s development as a definitive narrative foundation. DESTINYbit stated that version 1.0 will include a final quest (an epic Main Quest) to ultimately save humanity from extinction by machines; new playable characters; additional animated segments; and an increased number of tracks for use in-game.

The current prologue demo showcases the southern section of the continental map and includes the first chapter of the aforementioned Main Quest, along with supporting contracts and sonar events; henceforth, players will have a demonstration of both narrative-centric gameplay and expansive sandbox experiences.
With nearly one year now having passed since its entry into Steam Early Access, it seems likely that version 1.0 will contain enough substance to transform these systems from merely an entertaining sandbox into a comprehensive campaign experience with a defined objective.
